From Dule Temple to the Huangyaguan Great Wall — three day-trip spots near Tianjin
Dule Temple, Panshan, the Huangyaguan Great Wall — how to spend a day in Jizhou, about ninety minutes from downtown Tianjin.
When people in Tianjin plan a day trip out of the city, the destination is usually Jizhou District. It's the municipality's northernmost district, more than 100km from downtown, but the Jinji Expressway gets you there in about ninety minutes by car. A thousand-year-old temple (Dule Temple), a mountain the Qianlong Emperor reportedly loved above all others (Panshan), and a Ming-dynasty stretch of the Great Wall built from brick and stone (Huangyaguan) all sit within the same district, making it a natural single-day loop — on paper. In practice, fitting all three into one day is tight. Dule Temple is an indoor-ish visit that takes two to three hours, but Panshan and Huangyaguan each involve hiking or wall-trekking and eat up half a day or more, so it's more realistic to give one day to the temple and a separate day to the mountain or the wall.
Dule Temple — wooden architecture preserved from the Tang and Liao dynasties
Dule Temple, on Wuding Street in Jizhou's old town, was first built in 636 CE, during the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang, and rebuilt in 984 CE under the Liao dynasty into roughly the form it has today. Its mountain gate and Guanyin Pavilion are among the few surviving original Liao-dynasty structures of their kind in China; the architectural historian Liang Sicheng once described the temple as carrying "the lingering style of the Tang and opening the way for Song-style construction." Inside the pavilion stands a 16-meter clay statue of an eleven-faced Guanyin, said to be the largest surviving painted clay Buddhist statue in China.
Opening hours shift by season: March 16–April 30 and October 9–31, it's open 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. (last ticket 5 p.m.); May 1–October 8, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. (last ticket 5:30 p.m.); November 1–March 15, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. (last ticket 4:30 p.m.). Admission is quoted slightly differently across sources, generally somewhere in the 30–35 yuan range, with visitors 60 and older paying half price. City buses 530, 531, 535, and 536, or tourist lines 11 and 13, stop at "Gujie Xikou" or "Dule Temple," both an easy walk from the entrance.
Panshan — "Had I known of Panshan, why would I ever have gone south of the Yangtze?"
Panshan, 15km northwest of Dule Temple, is a national 5A-rated scenic area with records dating to the Han dynasty and a reputation that grew through the Tang. The Qianlong Emperor was especially fond of it, visiting 32 times during his reign and reportedly writing 1,366 poems about the mountain. The line "had I known of Panshan, why would I ever have gone south of the Yangtze?" (早知有盘山, 何必下江南) still shows up in nearly every introduction to the place.
You can hike to the summit or take a cable car. The Ruxing and Yunsong lines each cost 60 yuan one way, and the back-mountain route is 100 yuan one way; all cable car lines shut down for maintenance every Monday morning. Admission is 100 yuan for adults, and the site is open 8 a.m.–6 p.m. It's large enough that most visitors need a full day to see it properly — driving from downtown Tianjin and back covers roughly 128km round trip, so an early start is worth planning for.
The Huangyaguan Great Wall — a Ming-dynasty wall of mixed brick and stone
About 30km north of central Jizhou, the Huangyaguan Great Wall was first built during the Northern Qi dynasty and rebuilt with brick facing under the Ming general Qi Jiguang, who commanded the Jizhen garrison. Its defining feature is a wall that mixes brick and stone construction, with watchtowers that alternate between square and round — a section that's kept more of its original character than heavily restored stretches like Badaling or Mutianyu.
According to the operator's official site, an adult combo ticket covering the wall and the nearby Baxian Caves runs 85 yuan (70 yuan for the wall, 20 for the caves), with a senior/student combo at 45 yuan. Ticketing and visiting hours run roughly 8 a.m.–6 p.m., with some seasonal adjustment. From Jizhou's train station, tourist bus line 14 runs via Xiaying to the Huangyaguan stop; buses toward Xiaying start at 8:30 a.m. and run until 6:30 p.m., while the last bus back from Huangyaguan leaves at 6:10 p.m. — worth checking before you head out.
