Beining Park, in Tianjin's Hebei District, is a representative urban garden with more than a century of history. Of its roughly 570,000㎡, about a third (180,000㎡) is water, where broad lakes, traditional gardens and pavilions play off one another. It is both a place of rest for residents and a space to explore the history of modern Tianjin.
A garden that carries a century of history
Beining Park began as "Ningyuan," built around 1906 in the late Qing dynasty. It is said to have been created under Yuan Shikai, then the Viceroy of Zhili, with the name drawn from the phrase "through tranquility, one reaches the far and lasting." Expanded and restored several times through the Republic of China and the People's Republic, it took its present form and is now regarded as one of Tianjin's larger and better-preserved modern gardens.
The layout of a classical garden
The park is designed on the principles of classical Chinese garden-making. Large and small lakes are linked by waterways and crossed by 29 bridges of varying shapes. More than two kilometers of covered corridors connect the pavilions and naturally guide the visitor's route, while ponds, rockeries and old trees scattered throughout add depth. The scenery shifts with the seasons — cherry blossoms and roses in spring, lotus in summer, foliage in autumn, snow in winter — making it a well-known year-round spot for photography.
The park's landmark · Zhiyuan Pagoda
The park's most striking structure is Zhiyuan Pagoda, an octagonal, traditional-style tower about 74 meters tall with nine stories. Built in the traditional style in the 1980s, its upper floors offer a full view of the park and the Tianjin cityscape. Inside is an exhibition space on Tianjin's history and culture, and relics such as a Jin-dynasty stone lion nearby add to its historical value.
A place of rest for residents
Beining Park is used not only for walking and jogging but also for boating, family outings and wedding photography. It has a rose garden, a history exhibition hall and other attractions, and is free and easy to reach. Recently it has been renovating aging facilities and adding family-friendly amenities, continuing to develop as a resident-friendly space.
Amid a fast-changing Tianjin, Beining Park remains a space that holds both a century of time and the traces of the modern era. Here the layout of a classical garden and the history of modern Tianjin overlap, and even a two- or three-hour stroll offers a glimpse of another side of the city.
